Context
Since 2015 (yet historically), refugee crises have been pressingly affecting Europe and asylum seekers from war-torn countries have been reaching the continent. Despite difficulties caused by COVID-19, almost 100.000 individuals headed towards European borders in early 2021. In the same year, Mediterranean countries verified an even higher number of sea arrivals. Moreover, 2022 presented new challenges due to the Russian war in Ukraine, when millions fled to neighbouring countries.
These inflows of refugees, especially in 2015, coincided with terrorist attacks in the EU, deepening a mediatised fear of terrorists hiding in refugee flows. Although research shows that the likelihood that these individuals become radicalised is very low, their vulnerability to engage in radical ideologies might increase due to their experience-related risk factors and unsuccessful integration.
However, these risks and vulnerabilities can be diminished by implementing inclusive policies, including by non-governmental organisations and law enforcement agencies.
Hence, IN2PREV aims to facilitate refugees and asylum seekers’ integration and prevent their radicalisation through the early identification of vulnerability risk factors. This will be achieved by promoting cooperation between frontline practitioners, producing a tool to assess these individuals’ vulnerability to radicalisation, developing a mentoring programme for their inclusion, and capacitating frontline professionals.
Project time frame: 01/11/2022 – 31/10/2025 (36 months)
