Frontline Practitioners' Gathering Reiterates the Importance of Cross-Sectoral Collaboration in Preventing Radicalisation and Refugee Integration
The 1st IN2PREV Transnational Network Workshop provides a platform for frontline practitioners to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen collaborative approaches to prevent refugees and asylum seekers’ vulnerability to radicalisation and support their integration into European societies. The 1st Transnational Network Workshop of the IN2PREV Frontline Practitioners Network, held online on November 6th, 2024, brought together researchers and frontline practitioners from the law enforcement and non-governmental sectors, marking a significant step forward in building collaborative networks among frontline practitioners across Europe. With 38 members in attendance, the event featured interventions by three key organisations within the IN2PREV network. Bálint Josá, the director of UNITED for Intercultural Action, introduced the organisation as a pan-European network focused on confronting nationalism, racism, and fascism. UNITED is dedicated to building the capacity to resist discrimination and foster understanding, advocating for policies that promote inclusivity and protect the rights of migrants, refugees, and minorities across Europe. Anna Krasteva, co-founder and director of the Policy and Citizen’s Observatory, presented this think tank, which addresses critical issues such as digitalisation, migration, and climate change. The Observatory aims to bridge the gap between the policy-making level and the real-life impact it has on citizens, thus enhancing the creation of policies that are grounded in the real experiences of communities. Lastly, Meral Musli Tajroska introduced The Pleiades Organisation, a women-led NGO based in North Macedonia which focuses on supporting peace and security efforts and fostering economic development and civil society. Pleiades, through its innovative projects led by a multidisciplinary team in cooperation with various ministries, is currently at the forefront of preventing violent extremism in North Macedonia, most importantly by providing psycho-social support to families of returnees. Ultimately, each of these presentations brought a very unique perspective on the IN2PREV objectives of preventing radicalisation and fostering the integration of refugees into European societies. Participants had the opportunity to engage in an interactive networking session, moving into smaller breakout rooms to discuss how their respective organisations could align their efforts with the IN2PREV goals. This session highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and the potential for combining expertise from law enforcement agencies, researchers, and the NGO sector to create comprehensive and collaborative frameworks, thus enhancing the prevention of the vulnerability of refugees to radicalisation and fostering their successful integration. The success of the 1st Transnational Network Workshop is a testament to the dedication and active engagement of the members of the IN2PREV Frontline Practitioners Network. Moving forward, more of these collaborative efforts will be needed as they are essential in ensuring that refugees are better supported and integrated into European societies, strengthening them against radicalised narratives. What is next for the IN2PREV Frontline Practioners Network? Building on this momentum, the IN2PREV Frontline Practitioners Network is planning more Network members-exclusive events until its wrap-up in October 2025.
